Waiting and waiting on you…

Today I’ve gotten a taste of what working freelance might be like. I’ve started writing my trial article for the job I’m trying to get. I spent my day playing phone tag with sources and trying to piece together an article when they called me back. I have a decent draft now, but I’m still waiting on a few more people to get back to me. I’m sure this will be easier as I get to know sources and get more experience, but it was kind of stressful waiting all day.

I”m getting used to life here (as much as I can…). I really like being walking distance to just about anything I could need. I went grocery shopping yesterday morning, and it was just four blocks away. And it wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be. I’m going to make more of an effort to eat better and not buy as many pre-packaged and frozen meals. I don’t really intend to work out, but I think all of the walking will more than compensate.I can already feel my jeans getting looser.

Yesterday afternoon while I was waiting for my writing assignment, I walked over to Astoria Park (about a 25 minute walk away) and just sat on a bench reading. The weather here has been gorgeous this week.

I haven’t ventured out to Manhattan since my interview. I bought a $10 metrocard (instead of the unlimited pass) because I’m trying to conserve my money until I have a job. I’m going to go into town tomorrow night for a stand-up comedy show hosted by some of Andy’s friends (the sames ones who had the show when were here in November). I do want to explore the city, but right now I’m just trying to focus on getting a job and then a place to live.

I thought it was appropriate to post some lyrics from Empire State of Mind noting our past obsession with lyrics.

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of
    There’s nothing you can’t do
    Now you’re in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
    Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York

On the avenue, there ain’t never a curfew
    Ladies work so hard
Such a melting pot on the corner selling rock
    Preachers pray to God
    Hail a gypsy cab
Takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge
Someone sleeps tonight with a hunger
For more than from an empty fridge
I’m going to make it by any means
I got a pocketful of dreams

One hand in the air for the big city
Street lights, big dreams, all looking pretty
No place in the world that can compare
Put your lighters in the air
    Everybody say yeah, yeah yeah
    New York

    Congrats on your journey! ❤

Aw, thanks Stephy! Empire State of Mind (the Jay-Z version, but the Alicia Keyes chorus) has been my ringtone for a few months! 🙂
